The Dark Side of Mars

Your ship has crashed, and you wake up dazed on the planet Mars. The souls of your deceased crewmates still linger around you. Find them all to awaken from the self-inflicted limbo that you've fallen into due to the grief of losing your friends. But watch out, something is stalking you...

My Involvement

The Dark Side of Mars was the first game I ever created using Microsoft's Kodu Game Lab.
It was submitted for the 2013 KoduKup, a competition that encourages children under 15 to create a game within Kodu following a certain theme. Our theme was 'Mars', and we created a horror game using the assets withing Kodu. My team and I were chosen as one of the five finalists, where we had to present our game in front of four panellists who were in the gaming industry. I was in a team with two other girls, and we won the competition along with Xbox 360s each and a tour of Lionhead Studios (creators of Fable). I did the majority of the drag-and-drop coding within the game, along with the narrative design.

After the competition

After the competition, we gained a lot of publicity from the local welsh newspaper and women-in-gaming webpages. We were picked up by Microsoft to become Youthspark representatives and attended EGX where we ran a Kodu booth showing Kids how to use the software. After this event, we had the amazing opportunity to attend WeDay, a youth empowerment event in California. We got to meet a lot of famous faces at this event and stay in San Francisco for a week. The following year I went back to judge the 2014 KoduKup competition and passed down the golden trophy.

This experience kickstarted my dream to have a career within the gaming industry, and I have been obsessed with developing games ever since.
